BOOK GIVEAWAY

LISTEN UP!

We are giving away books!

Thank you so much for your participation in our project, Books for Crestline: to rebuild classroom libraries! We would like to offer you an update and inform you about our upcoming, final event.

Teacher book boxes are nearing completion; as long as we stay on target, books will be delivered within the next 2 weeks. Several orders have been made from non-profit community agencies who work with children and are in need of literature. After fulfilling all of these needs, we have found that we have a surplus of books.

Books for Crestline will be hosting our last event in one week on Saturday, April 20th 2013 from 2PM to 4PM at 2106 SE 134th Ave. Vancouver, WA 98683. This will be a book giveaway to distribute leftover books to members of our community who serve children, both formally and informally. Registration--which can be completed online or at the event--will be required to receive books. Check out the flyer for details about the event as well as a registration form. These forms must be printed and brought to the event if you choose to fill them out ahead of time.

Please email me at booksforcrestline@gmail.com if you have any questions!

See you next Saturday, rain or shine!

Donations

Attention Community!

Teacher book boxes are being packed as we speak! Or rather, as I write. Truthfully, after I write, since I'm the one who packs book boxes and I'm currently typing.

That means we are finishing distribution Step 1. Now we will move into distributing the excesses.

Here's where I need your help!

Step 2: If you know of any non-profit community agencies in our community in need of books, please contact me with information about the group as well as a person I can contact.

Step 3: If you teach children, formally or informally, stay tuned for information about a BOOK GIVEAWAY that will be scheduled in the next several weeks. Registration will be required, and preregistration will be available shortly.

Thanks!

Update

If anyone is still following this process, I apologize for my internet absence.

I'VE BEEN SWIMMING IN BOOKS!

I am overwhelmed by the generosity of so many members of our community. We collected just shy of 5,000 book titles and are almost ready to deliver to Crestline teachers.

I am busily packing up book orders over here! :)

Summoning Volunteers

Our last book drive is TOMORROW. See the sidebar for details -->

The next steps will be to complete our inventory, finish sorting books, and finalize everything so we can get these books into the hands of teachers!

Although tomorrow is our last scheduled event, we still have a lot of work ahead of us! If you are willing to volunteer your time tomorrow morning between 9:30 and 12:30 or sometime next week, please email me your availability at booksforcrestline@gmail.com

First Drive: A Success!

Our first book drive was a success. We had 30 donors come out and were able to get through inventorying 1,000 books, with more left to do. Thank you so much for all those who participated! I appreciate seeing community members come together for a good cause.

Here are some pictures to document our progress:

Ideas for Flyers

Flyers are available for you to use to help us spread the word about our project. Please consider helping in one or more of these ways:

1) Join the open Facebook group "Books for Crestline" and add five friends who may be interested

2) Talk to your neighborhood association president about including a flyer in the February newsletter

3) Ask your employer to post a flyer on your HR communication bulletin board, include a note in the employee newsletter or send out an email to employees

4) Set up a donation box at your church for high quality used children's books, post the full page flyer on the front of the box, then bring the donations to one of the two collection times

5) Post a notice on your "Nextdoor.com" community social network page with this blog address: www.booksforcrestline.blogspot.com

6) Ask the president of the civic organizations you are a member of to inform the other members of this opportunity

7) Print off one sheet of the quarter sheet flyers. Take one to both of your next door neighbors one to your neighbor across the street and post one on your fridge to remind you to talk to other people.

8) Print one sheet of the small flyers, cut them up and take them to your next book club or yoga class. Give an extra to the person behind you in the grocery store line :)

9) Print the large flyer and ask your favorite local business to post it on their community bulletin board

10) Tell one friend or relative who is a teacher out of state about the blog and ask them to share it with their co-workers.

11) Donate $6, in honor of the 6 teachers you had in grades K-5, on the home page of this website to go toward one more book to be purchased for a teacher.

12) Teach your kids about giving back to the community by inviting them to do some extra chores around the house. Pay them an allowance that they can use to go to a bookstore and buy a book for a teacher. Have them deliver the book on one of the two drop off days.

Thank you for all your help!

Coordination

* Update: I spoke with the Evergreen School District community relations department again this morning. The individual I communicated with said it was a wonderful project. We are looking forward to all of your donations and to continue working with the district as we go!

This evening, I attended the WyEast Parent Network board meeting to discuss our project. The PTO president of Crestline was also in attendance, so we were able to do some great coordinating! *WPN Board: Thanks so much for letting me attend to accomplish this!* We will continue on in our quest to replace classroom libraries and are spreading the word in as many ways as we can.

One of the highlights was determining that desired book lists have been requested from teachers and will be coming through for our project. All monetary donations will be used to buy books specifically requested by teachers and is still the ideal way to donate. Also, please collect your gently used, high quality children's literature appropriate for K-5 to drop at our book drive site. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Monetary Donations

We would love to accept as many monetary donations as possible. Remember, monetary donations are certainly desirable, even if it's a small amount. Every dollar counts!! With these donations, teachers will get to hand-select the book titles they would like to rebuild their classroom libraries and truly replace what they have lost.
Thank you to those who have already made contributions through the generous donations of books and money.
Click the donate link on our blog: www.booksforcrestline.blogspot.com.

First Book Donation

We received a generous donation from "Friends of the Library" at the Cascade Park Community Library this morning! They have a small store near the entrance of the library where you can buy very reasonably priced used books and they constantly accept donations. They handed over their entire shelf of children's books as a donation to our cause. Thank you!

KOIN Local 6

We were featured on KOIN local 6 at noon, and likely will be again this evening. Keep an eye out and spread the word!!

Crestline Elementary in the News

http://www.kgw.com/news/Fire-completely-destroys--189567561.html

Book Drive!

I was saddened by the news of the fire at Crestline Elementary this morning! I would like to put out a call for action for members of our community and elsewhere to provide relief for Crestline Elementary. I graduated two years ago from the master in teaching program at WSU-Vancouver. Through my experiences in that program and growing up as the daughter of a teacher I know how much teachers invest in their own classroom libraries. I decided to run a book drive with the purpose of rebuilding teacher libraries. Here's how you can help:

Donate Books!
Collect books, fiction and non-fiction, appropriate for children in grades K-5.  Donate them at a drop-off location or by contacting booksforcrestline@gmail.com to schedule a pick up.
Drop-off Location:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 13600 SE McGillivray Blvd.
Tuesday, February 12th from 6pm-8pm or Saturday, February 23rd from 10am-12pm.

Donate Money!
Visit booksforcrestline.blogspot.com and click the link to donate funds. These funds will be used only to purchase new and used books and teacher texts for individual teachers and their classrooms.

Donate Time!
Email booksforcrestline@gmail.com with your contact information if you'd like to volunteer. Opportunities might include contacting community agencies, organizing donated books or picking books up from members of the community, and share this blog with others.
